Costa Coffee is Rainforest Alliance Certified – What does it mean?

Coffee

The Rainforest Alliance (RFA) – founded in 1986 – is an international non-profit organization, working to create a better future for people and nature by making responsible business the new normal. Their main goal it to protect rainforests, and the animals and people living near them, along with the sustainable farming of coffee, tea, and other plants. The Standard pays special attention to transparency, to have a well-documented management system, and meet the Rainforest Alliance’s strict guidelines.

A coffee with a certification from the Rainforest Alliance

The premium coffee producer Costa Coffee only purchases coffee beans from certified sources as protecting the environment and the rights of farmers and local communities is their top priority. The RFA seal ensures that the coffee’s entire path can be traced back from the plantations to the packaged product. Every Costa product is grown following strict guidelines for better farming methods and conditions for workers, plus better care for nature. Only 5% of the world’s coffee meets these high standards, but for Costa Coffee it’s a non-negotiable.

The RFA certification seal and its criteria

Frogs are indicator species, meaning that they are a symbol of environmental health, and they are found on every continent except Antarctica. The green frog certification seal indicates that a farm, forest, or tourism enterprise has been audited to meet standards that require environmental, social, and economic sustainability.

Rainforest Alliance Certified™ farms are audited regularly to verify that farmers are complying with the Standard’s comprehensive requirements. The Standard is built on these important principles of sustainable farming:

  • Biodiversity conservation
  • Improved livelihoods and human well-being
  • Natural resource conservation
  • Effective planning and farm management systems”

To avoid harming the environment, Costa not only makes sure that their coffee beans are from a certified source, but their soft packaging is also consist only Rainforest Alliance-approved materials.
