A joint effort to protect the Danube's water

Within the framework of the I Love Duna programme, supported by Coca‑Cola Hungary, water quality will be monitored throughout the summer in the Danube Bend, including Szentendre, Dunabogdány, Kisoroszi, Leányfalu, Pócsmegyer, Szigetmonostor, Tahitótfalu, and for the first time ever in Zebegény as well. Regular measurements in the eight settlements have been carried out by the National Public Health and Medical Officer Service (ÁNTSZ) since May, and this year's final measurement will take place in September.

Visitors will find that water quality is controlled at the beaches of the Danube Bend. The latest measurement data is available to all who are interested on the I love Duna (iloveduna.hu) website.

The I Love Duna project was set up last year with the support of Coca‑Cola Hungary and its aim is to draw public attention to using the water in a responsible manner, which is our common responsibility. An important element of the programme is to boost the number of beach visitors and the range of leisure activities related to the Danube.

This year Zebegény has also joined the water quality measurement programme unfolding at the beaches of the Danube Bend, increasing the number of settlements where regular measurements take place under the programme to eight. The “Postás” (Postman) free beach in Szentendre was made suitable for bathing by the town’s city council this summer as a result of the I Love Duna campaign.

The ultimate goal of the I Love Duna project, launched last year, is to draw the public’s attention to the values of the Danube, the significance of the ecological status of wetlands and the importance of water quality, which is our common cause. As part of this, the programme supports the revival of recreational activities related to the Danube, sports and bathing in the settlements along the Danube Bend.

The latest measurement data by area, along with other useful information for those looking to relax by the Danube, are available on the I Love Duna (iloveduna.hu) website, operated by Coca‑Cola Hungary.

Water quality protection is a shared responsibility of the state, municipal and corporate sectors, so efforts for cleaner Danube water are also shared.  The Municipality of Szentendre, with the help of the competent authority and the support of Coca‑Cola Hungary, monitors the water quality of the coast in the course of regular measurements, as good water quality suitable for bathing is also a common interest.

I am also a huge fan of the Danube, I swim and kayak, so it is a pleasure to receive feedback that the water quality of the Danube is good. This is always reassuring.

Mrs. Dorottya Gyürk Sólyom Deputy Mayor of Szentendre

Responsible water use, including the protection of the Danube, is a priority for us on an international level, so over the past 5 years we have contributed more than 150 million forints to the preservation of the river's water quality. As a leading beverage producer, clean and high-quality water is a vital necessity for us and our consumers as well. This year we are helping as many as 8 settlements who have done a great deal to make the Danube a venue of our lives similar to what it was one hundred years ago. The improving quality of the water is fortunately helping our efforts.

Partnership for the Danube

The protection of the water quality and natural environment of the Danube that crosses 10 countries, the rehabilitation of the wetlands has been a cross-border common interest since the 1994 International Convention for the Protection of the Danube. The Coca‑Cola Company and Coca‑Cola HBC signed a partnership agreement with the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR) in 2005 to protect the Danube. The beverage company undertook to participate every year in celebrating the International Danube Day on June 29, and to support the conservation of wetlands along the Danube in cooperation with non-governmental organisations specialising in environmental protection. As part of this commitment, between 2008 and 2013 it has contributed 150 million forints to efforts aimed at saving the Szabadság (Freedom) Island near Mohács. Educational and information activities related to the Danube constitute the third pillar of the cooperation, for the promotion of which an educational material called the Danube Cyclopaedia was created and this is used in schools in Germany, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria.
