Caffè Vergnano and Félegyházi Family Bakery develop the breakfast culture in a HUF 280 billion market

As part of the recently announced cooperation, Caffè Vergnano, the premium Italian coffee brand distributed exclusively by Coca-Cola HBC Hungary, and Félegyházi Family Bakery held a joint press event at the Budapart Piknikség in Budapest. Participants of the event were introduced to the partnership between the two companies and were able to try the seasonal pastry and coffee specialties of the autumn and winter season. The Hungarian bakery industry, a market worth HUF 280 billion, has great potential for development, and the two companies are now working together to promote breakfast culture.

As the exclusive distributor of the premium Italian coffee brand Caffè Vergnano, Coca-Cola HBC Hungary aims to offer the right product for each consumption occasion that arises, regardless of the time of the day, in line with its business strategy. Coca-Cola HBC Group acquired a 30% stake in the family-owned Casa del Caffè Vergnano back in October 2021 and has been distributing premium Italian coffee products from Caffè Vergnano in Hungary since January 2022, in around 500 HoReCa outlets nationwide.

A major milestone in the brand's presence in Hungary is the partnership announced a few weeks ago with Félegyházi Family Bakery, making the 100% Hungarian-owned bakery the largest Caffè Vergnano catering partner of the 29-member counting Group.

Operating since 1999, the Félegyházi Family Bakery currently employs more than 1,400 people, has 90 bakeries, and supplies 400 partners - including retail chains, public catering companies and the Hungarian Defence Forces - with fresh baked goods every day.

In order to increase its productivity, Félegyházi Family Bakery is implementing a HUF 10 billion greenfield investment in Kiskunfélegyháza, which will include a warehouse, a multi-line production area, an automated and robotized refrigerated packaging plant and a frozen storage warehouse with a capacity of 5,000 pallets. The development will create 200 new jobs in the city.

Félegyházi has a 10 percent share of the approximately HUF 280 billion volume of the Hungarian bakery industry, with revenues reaching HUF 30 billion in 2023, making it the largest Hungarian-owned bakery chain in the fresh and frozen pastry market. The company produces 35,000 tons of baked goods annually, and by the end of 2024, Félegyházi's factory in Kisunfélegyháza is expected to manufacture 320 million pieces of products. Alongside the commercial production, the Félegyházi Family Bakery maintains artisan traditions and its own shops are visited by 40-45 thousand consumers every day, with more and more people discovering the coffee specialities of Caffè Vergnano.

As a family business, we operate bakeries in 36 cities across the Hungary. While we are competing with large international companies and small artisan bakeries in the pastry market, we are constantly striving to strengthen our local presence and competitiveness, to focus directly on consumer needs and to be flexible to the specific requirements of the domestic market. We are delighted to have been contacted by Coca-Cola HBC Hungary and Caffè Vergnano because we see and feel that we can be more successful by offering the best products to our consumers, who have quickly grown to love Caffè Vergnano's coffee specialities.

As part of the long-term partnership with the Félegyházi Family Bakery, Coca-Cola HBC Hungary will support the family-owned business with state-of-the-art equipment, professional consulting, servicing and professional barista training in addition to coffee sales. Besides the classic recipes, the company's coffee expert team is also involved in the creation of product pairings that allow the bakeries to renew their seasonal offer, contributing to the increase in the number of customers visiting them.

The cooperation of Félegyházi and Caffè Vergnano is a perfect match, as they are two family businesses with a long history and common values. We are committed to quality excellence, respect for tradition, the ability to constantly innovate and the passion to bring the best of our expertise to our consumers," explained Anita Partali, adding that „this is especially important at the outlets of Félegyházi Bakery, where 1.5 million cups of coffee are consumed annually.

By introducing seasonal recipes alongside classic drinks, we can bring expertise and a fresh approach to our customers by giving them new tastes and ingredients that they never thought they could combine with coffee before. In addition, flavors that are available for a limited period prove to be a profitable business decision. The introduction of a well-chosen seasonal coffee recipe can lead to a 15% increase in sales volume for a catering business.

Over the past few years, many so-called artisan bakeries have opened across the country and they work with traditional technologies, local ingredients and their own recipes, typically in small quantities but of high quality. The current developments are largely reminiscent of the early days at Félegyházi Family Bakery 25 years ago. Obviously, we are at a different stage now and we use different technology, but we still respect tradition and we are working to include these artisan products in our portfolio. As in coffee drinks, seasonality is present in our pastries. We follow changing consumer preferences and dominant ingredient trends and try to incorporate them into our own products. That's how, for example, the pistachio and raspberry swirl, which became a hit on its first day, or the autumn classic, pumpkin pie, were born.
